This Scale Measures Up

First Image
For a change of pace I figured I would start doing some blogs on some handy kitchen tools I use. This first entry will be on the digital scale I have been using lately. Where I have been baking a lot lately the scale has come in very handy, but it isn’t just for baking. When doing brines it is more accurate to weigh the salt. People on diets often resort to weighing out food portions too.

Place a bowl to hold you ingredient, zero out your scale & then weigh the item. It is a very quick and easy process.

So what makes this scale special? Well first off being a digital scale it has a tare feature. This allows you to put a bowl, dish or pan on the scale to hold the item you plan to measure. You hit the tare button and it zeros out the weight of the item on the scale. Then you can add the item you wish to weigh. The scale will weigh up to 11 pounds (5 Kg) which is more than adequate for any kitchen needs. The glass plate is easy to clean and does not absorb foods or food odors. the scale has an auto off feature where it shuts down after a short time of inactivity. It also switches from Imperial to Metric units so you can do recipes measured in grams easily. Lastly the scale features a clean design that appealed to the architect in me. At about $60.00 I am sure I am paying extra for that clean design but it was worth it to me.

You can use large or small bowls to measure your ingredients. The scale will weigh up to 11 pounds (5 Kg), more than enough for kitchen tasks.

The scale is a joy to use. The tare feature makes it quick and easy to use. I put one of my glass bowls on the measuring plate and hit the zero button. The scale zeros out the weigh and you add your ingredient. If you use a similar size bowl for your next item, the weight of the bowl zeros out and you simply add your ingredients. Even if you don’t get this particular scale, get a digital one with this zero tare feature. It is so much faster than fiddling with knobs zeroing out a mechanical scale. In general the best thing about this scale is the fact it is in and out of your life quickly, including cleanup. Some of the baking recipes I’ve been doing have a dozen or more ingredients, but weighing them is so quick and easy with this scale. Lastly the scale has a 10 year warrantee, which signals to me it is built for the long haul.

Other than the egg & water all of the other ingredients for these fresh baked hotdog rolls are best weighed not poured into measuring cups for volume. A digital scale makes it almost effortless.

If you have a lot of measuring you regularly do, trade in your old mechanical scale for a digital one with a zero tare feature. Both you speed and accuracy will increase dramatically. I bought my scale at Williams-Sonoma and I have seen it for a little less on Amazon.com. Bottom line I would buy this scale again in a minute.
