Eggtoberfest Bound

The last 12 months have been the best year ever since I started grilling and things are going to get even better in October when I travel down to Stone Mountain, GA for the 16th annual Eggtoberfest. Where it is the Columbus Day Weekend, which is a state holiday here in Massachusetts, I will be making a 4 day mini-vacation out of it. Needless to say as a newly died in the wool Egghead I am very eggcited (sorry I promise no more bad puns).

One of the best things about it for me is this years new venue. The last few years the event has been held at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. Now I know NASCAR racing is huge down south, it is not so much up here in New England and has little to no attraction for me. Stone Mountain is a park and resort with a Civil War Memorial in the form of a large statue of Confederate soldiers carved into the side of a mostly stone mountain. It is a state park and resort with all kinds of attractions. I visited Atlanta for 5 days about 10 years ago and Stone Mountain is one of the places my hosts took me. Our rooms are right on the grounds where the Eggtoberfest and the Meet & Greet the night before will take place. So during the event I won’t have to drive anywhere, I will be right there.

The Eggtoberfest was started as a way for the Big Green Egg Company to thank it’s loyal users. The first one in 1998 was host to about 100 people. Lately the size has swelled to over 3,000 people being fed by fellow Eggheads cooking on 200 Big Green Eggs. The Friday night before the event, there is a Meet & Greet, which features catered food, drinks and in the past has offered bands and fireworks. Many people seem to like this almost as much as the cooking part of the event on Saturday. The doors open at 9:00 on Saturday morning and breakfast type fare is served at first. As it get closer to noon the cooks switch to other types of food. At 3:00 things wind down and the Eggs are shutdown for the day. One of the reasons for this 3:00PM end time is because the Eggs are sold off at a discount price to attendees of the shown. During the show there is also a company store set up by the Big Green Egg Company where all of their products are offered for sale.

As I mentioned I am really excited about this and I am excited for a lot of reasons: I expect to learn a thing or two. I look forward to meeting folks I know from online on the Egghead forum-it will be nice putting a face to a forum handle. I can’t wait to see all the creative things folks do on their Eggs. Best of all I get to eat a bunch of great food cooked on the Egg. That’s all for now, but I am sure I will write a blog or two about it in October when I get back home.
