BEST DESSERTS - 1 of 7 Unranked-Alphabetical Order:
PHOTO ENTRY NAME:BUTTERMILK PIE SOURCE:King Arthur Flour website DATE FIRST COOKED: June 4, 2013
I had my first buttermilk pie about ten years ago and it quickly went to the top of my favorite desserts list. When I got my first Big Green Egg, this was one of the first desserts I wanted to try. I found an easy to make recipe from the King Arthur Flour website and I was in business. This is still one of my favorite desserts, to me it is like eating a buttery stack of buttermilk pancakes. But it is also the densest, heaviest dessert I think I've ever had. So don't eat a piece of this pie that is as big as you normally do. Also don't go back for seconds like you'll want to.
BEST DESSERTS - 2 of 7 Unranked-Alphabetical Order:
This recipe created the biggest cookie I have ever seen in a cast-iron skillet. It is easy to make and very tasty, plus I like the addition of the grilled pineapple slices on top. After the cookie has cooled, you simply cut it into wedge-shaped or square-shaped pieces and serve. It has a great consistency with a little bit of snap on the outside and a nice soft chew on the inside.

PHOTO ENTRY NAME:CREME BRULEE SOURCE:Smoke It LIKE A PRO DATE FIRST COOKED: March 27, 2015
I love Creme Brulee. It is one of my favorite desserts and I make a point of ordering it whenever I can because I knew there was no chance I would ever make it at home. Even less likely was the chance I would make it on the grill. This easy to make recipe proved me wrong. The hardest part was waiting for the dessert to set and be ready for eating. I would have bought Smoke It LIKE A PRO for just this one recipe alone and felt I got my money’s worth. The reality is there are many other equally good recipes in this grill cookbook.

PHOTO ENTRY NAME:EGGNOG BUNDT CAKE SOURCE:Cook's Illustrated Holiday Baking 2012 DATE FIRST COOKED: November 22, 2012
Eggnog is very popular around Thanksgiving and Christmas at my house. This cake looks like the perfect holiday cake. The eggnog part of the name reflects a twist added by the recipe. You take some of the cake batter and enhance it with additional flavors including: rum, cinnamon and nutmeg to help simulate eggnog. The regular batter is poured into the bundt cake pan and the denser enhanced batter is added on top. Since you cook a bundt cake upside down this enhanced better ends up on the bottom of the cake and adds a rich layer flavor. This is a great holiday cake and everyone around here loved it.

PHOTO ENTRY NAME:GRILLED CORN PUDDING SOURCE:Fire & Smoke DATE FIRST COOKED: May 24, 2014
This Southern dish is decidedly not low cal or low-fat. It uses lots of butter, heavy cream, sugar and brown sugar to make a totally decadent dish. People were cutting themselves second slices of it even while they were complaining they were too full. The grilled corn adds a nice element of smoky flavor you wouldn't get if you made this dessert indoors.

PHOTO ENTRY NAME:HERMITS II SOURCE:Smoke It LIKE A PRO DATE FIRST COOKED: April 4, 2015
Hermits are a popular regional cookie here in New England. They are like a soft gingerbread man and are my favorite cookie. This recipe from Smoke It LIKE A PRO, knockedoff the previous entry here from Cook’s Illustrated magazine. They were faster and easier to make and tasted as good or better than the CI versions. These Hermits are made in a Jelly Roll pan vs the CI version’s logs. This allows you get them on and off the grill quickly and you can cut them into the traditional square shaped pieces. This is my new Go-To Hermits recipe.

PHOTO ENTRY NAME:SMOKE ROASTED APPLES SOURCE:Primal Grill TV show DATE FIRST COOKED: August 4, 2012
This recipe from Steven Raichlen's Primal Grill TV show is the only recipe here that is cooked low and slow. I did them on the smoker because I could get more smoke flavor on with my smoker than my gas grill. I shall have to try them again now that I can get enough smoke on with the Big Green Egg at a higher temperature. The apples are cored out, and five layers of fillings are added inside the apples. The apples are cooked until layer squeezably soft and then they are served with some ice cream on the side. They are absolutely delicious!!
Motivation:
People are always asking me what my favorite recipes are. This section had it's origins in a seven part BLOG entry I wrote in 2011 called A Few of My Favorite Things. I have made many great dishes since then and also started making other types of foods such as Stir Fries. This section needed to be updated and expanded to stay current or be dropped. I chose the later and you have the results of my reworking the section in the Fall of 2014
Desserts Info:
I always wanted to make dessert on the grill, but it wasn't until I got my Big Green Egg that I saturated making desserts on a regular basis. The DESSERTSsection of the site does not have a lot of entries yet. With the purchase of a third Egg dedicated to baking related tasks, I expect this to change real soon. This page contains some of the best burgers I have made. They are simply in alphabetical order and NOT in any kind of ranking.
